Matthew 6:19–34 | Seek First God’s Kingdom

Reflection

Matthew 6:19–34 continues the Sermon on the Mount as Jesus speaks about treasure, money, trust, and anxiety.

He begins by warning against building our lives around treasures on earth. Earthly possessions are temporary and vulnerable to loss, but Jesus calls His followers to invest in treasure that lasts.

His words lead to an important principle: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Jesus then makes clear that our deepest allegiance cannot be divided. We cannot serve both God and Mammon. Money can be useful, but it must never become our master or the ultimate source of our security.

From there, Jesus addresses worry.

He points His listeners toward the birds of the sky and the lilies of the field. God provides for His creation, and Jesus reminds us that our heavenly Father knows what we need.

This does not mean abandoning wise planning or responsibility. Instead, Jesus challenges the kind of anxiety that continually carries tomorrow’s possible troubles into today.

At the heart of the passage is His instruction:

“Seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness.”

Our first priority is not accumulating more, controlling every possible outcome, or building perfect earthly security. It is seeking God and living faithfully before Him.

Matthew 6:19–34 reminds us to hold temporary things lightly, trust our Father with our needs, and take life one day at a time.

We can plan for tomorrow while still entrusting it to God.
