Matthew 8:18–34 | The Cost of Following Jesus
Reflection
Matthew 8:18–34 reveals both the cost of following Jesus and the extraordinary extent of His authority.
The passage begins with people expressing a desire to follow Christ. Jesus responds honestly, making clear that discipleship should not be approached casually or only when it is convenient.
His call is simple: “Follow me.”
The disciples then follow Jesus into a boat and soon find themselves in a violent storm.
As waves cover the boat, they wake Jesus and cry, “Save us, Lord!”
Jesus rebukes the wind and sea, and a great calm follows.
The disciples are left asking an important question: “What kind of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
When they reach the other side, Jesus confronts two demon-possessed men. The demons immediately recognise Him as the Son of God, and at a single command from Jesus, they leave.
Together, these events reveal that Christ’s authority extends over creation and spiritual darkness.
Matthew 8:18–34 also reminds us that following Jesus does not guarantee a life without storms.
The disciples encountered the storm precisely while following Him.
Faith therefore does not mean we will always understand our circumstances or avoid difficulty. It means trusting the One who remains Lord within them.
The passage challenges us to place Christ first, follow where He leads, and remember that whatever storm we face is never greater than His authority.
