Matthew 1:18–25 | Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son
Reflection
Matthew 1:18–25 introduces us to Joseph at one of the most difficult moments of his life.
Mary, whom Joseph is pledged to marry, is expecting a child. Without knowing what God is doing, Joseph decides to end the relationship quietly rather than expose Mary to public disgrace.
Then everything changes.
An angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream and tells him not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife. The child she carries has been conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Joseph is also given an important instruction: the child is to be named Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.
Joseph cannot see everything that lies ahead. He does not receive a complete explanation of the future. Instead, he is given the next step and chooses to obey.
His response gives us a powerful example of quiet faithfulness.
There are times in life when circumstances do not make sense. Plans change, questions remain unanswered, and we cannot see how everything fits together. Joseph’s experience reminds us that our limited understanding does not mean God has stopped working.
The passage also points us directly toward Jesus.
Matthew describes Him as the One who will save His people from their sins and connects His birth with the name Immanuel — “God with us.”
These words take us to the heart of the Christian message. Jesus did not simply come to teach good principles or provide an inspiring example. He came as the Saviour.
Matthew 1:18–25 therefore leaves us with two powerful truths: we can trust God even when we cannot see the whole picture, and in Jesus Christ, God has come near to save.
