Day 1 | Matthew 1꞉1–17 | The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah
Today we begin our journey through the Gospel of Matthew with the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah. At first glance, a list of names can seem easy to skim past, but Matthew’s opening shows us that Jesus stands at the centre of a story God has been unfolding across generations.
Reflection
Matthew opens his Gospel by tracing the family line of Jesus through Abraham and David. This genealogy connects Jesus to God’s promises and reminds us that the coming of Christ was not an isolated event, but the fulfilment of a much larger story.
The names in this passage represent generations of faith, failure, waiting and hope. Some were well known, while others lived quietly in the background. Yet each formed part of the line that ultimately led to Jesus.
That can encourage us today. We may not always see how God is working through the ordinary details of our lives, but His purposes are not limited by what we can see in the moment. The genealogy of Jesus reminds us that God remains faithful across generations and that His promises unfold in His perfect time.
Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing us together as we begin this journey through the Gospel of Matthew. Open our hearts and minds to Your Word, and help us see more clearly who Jesus is and what His coming means for us. Guide us by Your Spirit as we read, reflect and pray together. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for Your faithfulness through every generation. Help us trust Your purposes even when we cannot yet see how the pieces fit together. As we continue through Matthew, draw us closer to Jesus and help us live each day with greater faith, hope and obedience. In Jesus’ name, amen.
