Matthew 1:1–17 opens the Gospel with the genealogy of Jesus Christ, tracing His family line from Abraham through David, through the exile, and finally to Joseph and Mary.
At first, a genealogy can seem like little more than a long list of names. But Matthew begins here for an important reason. He is showing that Jesus did not appear without context. His coming is connected to the promises God made long before.
Abraham and David both hold important places in the biblical story, and Matthew’s genealogy points back to those promises while showing how they ultimately lead to Christ.
The family line also includes people with complicated stories. Some are remembered for great faith, while others are connected with failure, hardship, or unexpected circumstances. Yet God continued working through generation after generation.
That gives us an encouraging reminder: God’s purposes are not limited by imperfect people or difficult circumstances.
There are also many names in the genealogy that receive very little attention elsewhere in Scripture. They remind us that ordinary faithfulness still matters. Most people will never see the full effect of their prayers, choices, service, or obedience, but that does not make those things insignificant.
Matthew 1:1–17 points us toward three important truths: God keeps His promises, God works through imperfect people, and God remains faithful even when we cannot yet see the whole story.
As the Gospel of Matthew begins, every generation in the genealogy leads us toward Jesus Christ, the One at the centre of the story.
