Matthew 4:12–25 | Jesus Begins His Ministry
Reflection
Matthew 4:12–25 marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry in Galilee.
After John is delivered up, Jesus moves to Capernaum. Matthew connects His arrival with Isaiah’s prophecy that people sitting in darkness would see a great light.
Jesus begins preaching a clear message:
“Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
Then, beside the Sea of Galilee, He calls His first disciples.
Peter and Andrew are casting their nets when Jesus tells them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers for men.”
They immediately leave their nets and follow Him.
Soon afterward, Jesus calls James and John, who also leave their boat and follow.
Their response shows us something important about discipleship.
Following Jesus is more than admiring Him or agreeing with His teaching. It means allowing Him to lead and giving Him authority over our priorities and direction.
The final verses provide a summary of Jesus’ growing ministry throughout Galilee.
He teaches in the synagogues, proclaims the Good News of the Kingdom, and heals those suffering from disease and sickness.
His ministry combines truth, authority, and compassion.
Matthew 4:12–25 therefore introduces us to the pattern that will continue throughout the Gospel: Jesus calls people to repentance, invites them to follow Him, teaches the truth of God’s Kingdom, and responds compassionately to human suffering.
The first disciples were ordinary fishermen, but Jesus called them into a new purpose.
The same principle remains true for us.
We may not know everything the road ahead will contain, but we can respond to Christ one faithful step at a time.
