Matthew 8:1–17 | Jesus Heals and Restores

Reflection

Matthew 8:1–17 moves from the teaching of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount to a series of remarkable acts of healing.

First, a man with leprosy approaches Jesus with confidence in His power: “Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean.”

Jesus reaches out and touches him before immediately cleansing him. The moment reveals not only Christ’s authority, but also His compassion toward someone whose condition had brought isolation.

In Capernaum, a Roman centurion asks Jesus to help his paralysed servant. The centurion believes that Jesus does not even need to enter his home — His word alone is enough.

Jesus marvels at his faith and heals the servant from a distance.

Later, Jesus enters Peter’s house and heals his mother-in-law from a fever. That evening, many more suffering people are brought to Him, and Matthew describes Jesus healing the sick and casting out spirits with a word.

These miracles reveal the extraordinary authority of Jesus over sickness and spiritual oppression.

They also show His willingness to respond compassionately to people from very different backgrounds.

Matthew connects these healings with Isaiah’s words: “He took our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

Matthew 8:1–17 invites us to approach Christ with humility and faith while remembering that faith does not mean demanding a particular outcome.

Like the leper, we can trust His power while submitting ourselves to His will.

The passage shows us a Saviour who is powerful enough to help and compassionate enough to come near.
