Matthew 7:15–29 | Build Your House on the Rock

Reflection

Matthew 7:15–29 brings the Sermon on the Mount to a powerful conclusion.

Jesus begins by warning His followers about false prophets. Outward appearances can be misleading, so He gives a practical test: “By their fruits you will know them.”

Over time, character and teaching produce visible results.

Jesus then gives an even more serious warning. Simply calling Him “Lord” or performing impressive religious works is not the same as truly knowing Him.

Christian faith is more than religious appearance or activity. Genuine discipleship involves belonging to Christ and living in response to His will.

Jesus closes with one of His most memorable illustrations.

A wise man builds his house on rock, while a foolish man builds on sand. Both houses experience rain, floods, and wind.

The difference is the foundation.

Jesus explains that the wise person is the one who hears His words and puts them into practice.

The foolish person hears the same words but does not obey them.

Matthew 7:15–29 therefore brings us to the central question at the end of the Sermon on the Mount: what will we do with what Jesus has taught?

Knowledge alone is not the goal.

His words are meant to shape our decisions, relationships, priorities, and character.

Storms will eventually reveal what our lives have been built upon.

Jesus calls us to build on a foundation that lasts — hearing His words, trusting Him, and putting His teaching into practice.
