Matthew 2:19–23 | The Return to Nazareth

Reflection

Matthew 2:19–23 brings the period of exile in Egypt to an end.

After Herod dies, an angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream and tells him to take Jesus and Mary back to the land of Israel. Once again, Joseph responds without delay.

But the journey does not unfold exactly as he may have expected.

When Joseph learns that Archelaus is ruling over Judea in place of Herod, he is afraid to settle there. After receiving another warning in a dream, he changes direction and takes his family to Galilee, where they settle in Nazareth.

Joseph’s repeated response throughout these opening chapters is one of quiet obedience.

He is never given the entire plan at once. Instead, he receives enough direction for the next step and responds faithfully.

His example reminds us that following God does not always mean knowing exactly where the road will lead. Circumstances may change, plans may need to be adjusted, and wisdom may require us to take a different path.

The family eventually makes its home in Nazareth, an ordinary town that would later become closely associated with Jesus.

That too is significant. Much of Jesus’ early life unfolds away from palaces and public attention. He grows up in an ordinary place among ordinary people.

Matthew 2:19–23 reminds us that ordinary seasons are not meaningless. God can work through quiet obedience, changing circumstances, and everyday faithfulness.

We may not always know the whole road ahead, but we can seek God, use wisdom, and faithfully take the next step He places before us.
